Education and Flourishing

Introduction:

Education, along with the acquisition of knowledge, has the transformative power to shape minds, instill values and pave the way for personal prosperity. Education shows respect for students and helps them flourish in at least three ways – either by enhancing their ability to act. And make decisions independently, by supporting the development of skills or aptitudes, or by engaging students with ideas that are worth contemplating simply because they are right, good, or beautiful. These ways of thriving are the kinds of goals that government should support, both through the kinds of educational institutions and practices it supports and through the goals it directs schools to achieve.

1. Education as Empowerment:

Education is widely acknowledged as a powerful and positive agent of individual, institutional, and societal change. Indeed, the education sector is recognized as a significant global industry requiring substantial and continuous investments. These investments take many forms, including financial, human resource, curricular, and infrastructural in nature. Available demographic indicators suggest that over 700 million children and adults are served by formal education systems, with a roughly equal number participating in informal and non-formal programs.

The term “empowerment” is frequently employed in the development education context, often to describe the desired qualitative outcome of investments in the education sector. The development education literature suggests that empowerment includes variables such as the expansion and enhancement of individuals’ economic, social, political, and personal capabilities. Additionally, the empowerment concept implies that individuals, and the groups to which they belong, have, or will attain, greater access to decision-making opportunities and more control over the conditions of their individual and collective lives.

2. Building Self-Efficacy:

Education, individuals grows a sense of self-efficacy. When students exceed challenges, they build confidence and resilience, and lay the foundation for personal flourishing. Self-efficacy is concerned with perceived belief in one’s capability to organize and execute a course of action required to produce a given attainment. Self-efficacy is not a global trait, but it is context-specific.

3. Values-Based Education:

An essential aspect of personal development is aligning education with values. Institutions that emphasize ethical and moral principles contribute to the development of individuals who not only excel academically but also live lives guided by a strong moral compass.

At the end, we argue that the primary purpose of education is to promote personal flourishing in individuals, communities, and the world. This new visionary framework for education represents both a significant departure from and a fruitful evolution of the human capital perspective, designed to foster a balance of strategic, personal, social, and citizenship skills as well as practical wisdom and ethical sensibilities. Flourishing – the central concept of our paper – is less a destination to be reached than a way to journey that matters, enhancing the experiential quality of life.
